Hey everyone! I received Heartless by Marissa Meyer in my November OwlCrate box and finished it this past December - so here's a really late review!
THIS REVIEW IS SPOILER FREE!!!
I adore Marissa Meyer's Lunar Chronicles series and was really excited to dig into this book and see what amazing story she would bring to the table!
This book centers around Catherine, a duchess to Green Turtle Rock grove with a love of baking. She is expected to marry the King of Hearts by her parents and return the kings affections. Theres just one problem. She's not in love with the king. Catherine wants to be a baker along with her friend, and scullery maid, Mary Ann. It looks like life might be okay until she meets the person that changes it all. Jest.
Now when I first heard about this book I got so excited. I'm a huge Alice in Wonderland fan and hearing about a Queen of Hearts backstory made my mouth drool! But this book didn't live up to my expectations and Meyer's previous works.
Overall, I would give this book a 3.2/5 stars.
So here is how I got my rating:
I give reviews based on five separate categories: plot, characters, description, pace, and extras. Each point earns a total of 1 star - which is what gives my five star rating.
Plot: 0.5/1 stars. I feel like this book had a lot of potential to do some amazing things - but it was essentially just following Catherine's life. There was minor action, lots of romance, and a hasty (in my opinion, BAD) ending. I was really disappointed - especially after reading The Lunar Chronicles which was amazing!
Characters: 0.3/1 stars. Catherine annoyed me. Her parents were awful. The King of Hearts was creepy. Mary Ann is terrible. The only characters I genuinely liked were Jest, Raven, and occasionally The Mad Hatter. Everyone else either had lame character development or was irritating to read.
Description: 1/1 stars. If Meyer is good at one thing - it's description! She's great at showing the reader everything thats going on and bringing lots of imagery.
Pace: 0.9/1 stars. The pacing was good. A little slow and then really fast at the end but that's forgivable. It was good overall.
Extras: 0.5/1 stars. I have to give her credit - Jest seems like a guy I would TOTALLY want to date! That deserves some extra points if I do say so myself!
