The Diviners by Libba Bray is a book I read this past summer and absolutely LOVED. I have just recently finished Lair of Dreams (book 2) and decided to write a review on the series. So let's dive in!
This book is centered around a few characters, Evie, Theta, Uncle Will, Henry, Mabel, Sam, Jericho, and Memphis. Evie is a girl from Ohio that, after an embarrassing moment at a party, is sent to stay with her Uncle Will in New York City. She meets up with a pen pal, Mabel, and begins living it up in NYC in the 1920's. Evie is clearly a flapper and has the ability to read objects - meaning if she touches an object she can look into people's pass and memories. At the same time, there are dark forces and evil creeping around NYC and causing mayhem and panic. It's up to Evie and her friends to try and stop it.
So my initial thought when I read the description was "HOLY COW THIS BOOK SOUNDS AMAZING". My reaction after I read book 1 and 2 was "HOLY COW THIS BOOK SERIES IS AMAZING!" If you like creepy paranormal books, historical fiction, or both - GET THIS BOOK NOW. You will not regret it!
Overall, I would give this book a 5/5 star review! So here is how I got my rating:
I give reviews based on five separate categories: plot, characters, description, pace, and extras. Each point earns a total of 1 star - which is what gives my five star rating.
Plot: 1/1 stars. The plot is so creative and unique - it blows my mind that someone has planned and thought this entire book through! This book has given me chills, made me laugh, and cry. It is a book I couldn't put down.
Characters: 1/1 stars. When Bray wants to write charming characters, she can write charming characters! She can make them seem sweet, kind, creepy, scary, you name it. They feel all too real!
Description: 1/1 stars. Bray is the QUEEN of description! She is not only good at describing and telling us what happens, but also showing us through snazzy dialogue and great scenes. The book feels too real!
Pace: 1/1 stars. The book is very long, but the pace never drags. The book will keep pushing you forward, even when you don't want to know what is going to happen next.
Extras: 1/1 stars. The creativeness of the series and the fluidity of it still astounds me. I have never read a series quite like this before and it is AMAZING.
