I received Digging in the Stars by Katherine Blakeney from Blaze Publishing in exchange for an honest review.
THIS REVIEW IS SPOILER FREE!!!
This book is centered around Carter and her need to find her friend Conrad. He has been missing for a few weeks now with no contact other than the belongings that were found and sent to her. Carter is supposed to schedule the expedition trip to another planet for the archeology department, but decides to lie and sends the group to planet Thror, in hopes she can sneak away and find Conrad. With no way off the planet, once they get there, Professor P decides to try and find clues about the lost civilization on Thror. From trying to get around the Furry Giants to dangers on the planet itself, Carter will have to lead Professor P and the other girls safely to Conrad. If she can find him.
I didn't have many expectations about what would occur in this book, but I was still blown away. I thought the plot was great and the book was well written. The middle seemed to slow down for me, especially since the book takes off with a fast start, but if you can get through it, you will not regret it! The only issue I had with the ENTIRE book was that the ending was rushed and illogical. I thought that part of the ending came out of nowhere and was completely forced. Besides that one part, the ending completely shocked me and I really enjoyed the novel.
Overall, I would give this book a 4.2/5 star rating. So here is how I got my rating:
I give reviews based on five separate categories: plot, characters, description, pace, and extras. Each point earns a total of 1 star - which is what gives my five star rating.
Plot: 0.9/1 stars. The plot is completely original and clear. There are no holes in the logic of the world. The only issue I had was the end. It seemed rushed, illogical, and was disappointing compared to the amazing plot line that lead up to that point. Now, without giving awhile spoilers, most of the ending was logical - it was one particular part about Carter and Conrad's friendship that was illogical.
Characters: 0.8/1 stars. Many of the characters were interesting and unique, although even the most interesting characters tended to fall flat at certain points. I thought many were funny and fun to read with though, which is why I only dropped it 0.2 points.
Description: 1/1 stars. This book is very good about showing and telling the world around it. We can clearly see the desolate landscape Carter finds herself on, as well as the odd foods, people, and creatures they find. You will not be confused as to what is going on or what the characters are seeing.
Pace: 0.8/1 stars. The book took off like a rocket, shooting up and up, until it dropped and plateaued for what felt like half the novel, until it picked back up again and shot us into the ending. The pace never dragged, but it did slow down compared to the beginning and the ending. Besides that, it was a great, readable pace!
Extras: 0.7/1 stars. The ending was FANTASTIC! (besides the one small plot point at the very end of the book that I didn't like) The path the reader is led to honestly shocked me and gave this book the extra OOMPH I like to read about! There were other spectacular things in the booked I liked as well, but you'll have to read it to find out!
