Today I'm going to be reviewing the November Mystery novel from BooklyBox, Last Seen Leaving by Caleb Roehric. This is a SPOILER FREE review, so with that, LET'S GET STARTED!
So this book is about fifteen year old Flynn who's girlfriend suddenly disappears. She was last seen leaving school but never came home. Now Flynn has a secret that he can't reveal, even though it could be helpful in finding his girlfriend January. We journey with Flynn as he tries to figure out what happened to January and why these stories don't seem to be adding up.
Goodreads gives this book a 3.86/5 stars.
I agree with this review, I would give this book a 3.5/5 stars and here's why. Overall the book was very good but it is a little hard to explain this review in detail since this review is spoiler free, but I'll try!
So here is how I got my rating:
I give reviews based on five separate categories: plot, characters, description, pace, and extras. Each point earns a total of 1 star - which is what gives my five star rating.
Plot: 0.5/1 stars. My expectation for this plot was much different than what I received. It is not that I think the plot is bad in any way, it's that I think it could have been a stronger, more engaging plot, and that's not what I received. The content was interesting, but the delivery wasn't good in my opinion.
Characters: 1/1 stars. The characters were very good in my opinion. Bring in a different perspective as the protagonist was refreshing to read about. Flynn's conflicts in trying to figure out January as well as his own personal conflicts shape him to be a realistic and enjoyable character. January's disappearance and the flashbacks we get to see why this might have happened make January realistic and understandable. The author was very educated for both genders and made them realistic and interesting to read.
Description 0.5/1 stars. His descriptions were good but not outstanding. The details of the novel did not lead to fun, wild descriptions in general, but when the scene was getting intense the description lets the reader down. I did not feel myself in the room or area based on the details I was given which was bothersome and disappointing for me as a reader.
Pace: 1/1 stars. The pace was not too slow nor too fast. The author guides us through this situation with ease and respects the readers attention span. He doesn't speed through things or take his sweet time, which allowed me to get through the book at a steady and enjoyable pace.
Extras 0.5/1 stars. As for extras, I would say that it wasn't enough for a full star because of how these other, crazy aspects were given to us. That extra POP in the book was there, but done in a way that I would have to say, wasn't very good.
Overall, I really did enjoy this book. I think the author hit a lot of important aspects teenagers may go through and gave it to us in a creative plot. While I wish certain aspects of the book were changed or rewritten, I think Roehric wrote an enjoyable mystery novel that people should at least give a try!
Thanks for reading! If you enjoyed my review, or didn't, please feel free to let me know!
